Lexus Chase History

This is a Grade 1 National Hunt Steeplechase open to horses aged five years or older. It is located at Leopardstown in Ireland and is run over a distance of three miles with seventeen fences to be overcome in the process. It takes place each year during the Christmas Festival meeting and is often won by horses who go on to perform well at the Cheltenham Festival.

The race has been running for a number of years now, dating back to 1986, yet it has changed its name and distance a number of times. Originally it was known as the Black and White Whisky Champion Chase and was run over a two and a half mile distance, before being replaced in 1992 by the Ericsson Chase.

It was only in 1992 that the race took on its current three mile distance, and it was not until 2004 that it adopted its current sponsor and therefore name. From the outset of this race there have been a number of greatly respected horses, jockeys and trainers competing in this event. Despite attracting a number of class competitors here, many of the race records have been in place now for at least a decade.

The most successful horse to have ever competed in this particular race was Beef or Salmon. This horse was successful in winning the Lexus Chase on three occasions, the first being in 2002 and then consecutively in 2004 and 2005. Just two other horses have managed consecutive victories here, the first was Maid of Money in 1988 and 1989 and the other being Rince Ri who was triumphant in 1999 and 2000.

It is the trainer of Beef or Salmon, though, who obtains the accolade of the most successful trainer in this race’s history. Aside from the three victories achieved by that great horse, Michael Hourigan also had two more winners in 1993 and 1998 in the form of Deep Bramble and Dorans Pride respectively. Out of these five successes, Hourigan had jockey Paul Carberry in the saddle three times, two on the back of Beef or Salmon. Carberry is in turn the most successful jockey to have competed in this event; with an additional win as recently as 2010 as he rode a Noel Reade-trained horse, Pandorama, to victory.

There has only ever been one winning horse in the history of this race to be aged 10 or older, this being in 2012 as Tidal Bay ran out victor. Moreover, it has proven a difficult event for the younger competitors to win also, despite half of the first eight winners of this race being aged six-years-old. Since 2000, there have been just two six-year-olds to win this race, with there never being a five-year-old winner ever here.
