Doncaster Leads The Action With St Leger Meeting
It’s the penultimate day of the St Leger meeting at Doncaster today and its eight-race card features a number of interesting-looking betting opportunities. Check out our Racing Tips for Today’s Racing page for our best value tips.
Elsewhere there are decent cards in the offing at both Chester and Sandown, with Salisbury and Listowel in Ireland also worth a look.
Doncaster Cup the pick of the day
The biggest race of the day is the 3.35 at Doncaster, the Doncaster Cup. Part of the British Champions Series, this stamina-sapping run over a distance of two miles and two furlongs is not the weak-hearted.
The Willie Mullins-trained Thomas Hobson goes into the race as the clear favourite around the 15/8 mark. With Ryan Moore in the saddle and an unlucky second place in this one last year, it could well be time for this eight year old Ascot Stakes (2017) winner to shine.
Elsewhere on the card, the five furlong Childers Stakes at 2.25 could be worth a look. This Group 2 race for two year old contains some real speedsters including Richard Spencer’s highly rated Rumble Inthejungle and the Archie Watson dup of Soldier’s Call and Shumookhi.
The opening Sceptre Stakes at 1.50 also looks a tasty contest with five year olds Laugh Aloud and Dancing Star vying for favouritism at the time of writing.
Looking elsewhere and Chester has a handicap-heavy card of Class 3 and Class 4 races that could offer some decent betting value, especially the 3.40 seven furlong race which has a number of solid contenders at double figure odds.
At Sandown we have a couple of interesting-looking five furlong races, including the 2.50 which features Michael Appleby’s four year old gelding Tan. With three wins out of four this season, he could offer decent value at around the 7/2 mark.
Over the Irish sea there’s a card that includes a couple of hurdles, so this could be worth a look if you are missing the National Hunt action.
