The July Festival at Newmarket contains a number of exciting races but none are bigger than the Falmouth Stakes. Taking place over a straight mile, this important Group 1 is among the main options for the best fillies and mares in racing and gives three-year-olds a chance to compete against their elders at the very top level.
Competitive Field Provides Plenty of Value
A small but select field of seven horses has been confirmed for the 2019 Falmouth Stakes. That’s created one of those races in which every horse has a genuine chance of winning with the betting spread from One Master at 5/2 to Mot Juste at 14/1.
One Master’s position at the head of the market is a little questionable on first glance of her form but the quality of her run when finishing third in the Queen Anne Stakes was a big step forward from her seasonal reappearance so is worth bearing in mind. If the rain falls heavily in Newmarket, One Market’s position will only strengthen but she would be a rare five-year-old winner and hasn’t take on Newmarket’s undulating track before so looks a favourite to take on in such a competitive race.
Beshaayir’s Improvement Set to Continue
The stats show that previous win at the Group level is not a prerequisite for glory in the Falmouth Stakes. What punters are really looking for is a progressive horse who has at least won a Listed race. The William Haggas trained Beshaayir ticks those boxes.
She returned to action this season with a career best performance to win the Group 2 Lanwades Stud Stakes at the Curragh. That followed on from her last race of last season where she won a Listed race at Newmarket over 1 mile. That she can cope with the undulations of this track is a big plus and makes Beshaayir look the most likely winner at 4/1 with Ladbrokes.
Veracious Well in With a Chance
When it comes to a bet from a little further down the market it is tough to ignore the appeal of Veracious. Her price reflects a poor run at Royal Ascot but connections have been very quick to make excuses for that and claim that she is right back at the top of her game following some very impressive work at home.
With Sir Michael Stoute guiding her progress, the four-year-old very much has her best days ahead of her and connection are right to be hopeful that Friday could be her best day so far with victory in a Group 1.
Beshaayir and Veracious are exactly the sort of horses that you’d want to have onside for the Falmouth Stakes. The pair are both improving and ready for a big step forward with preference going to Beshaayir because of her better form so far this season. Many punters will make the call to back Veracious instead but an each way could be the best option at 7/1 with bet365 so as to complement the headline selection.
