Horse Racing Tips Today – Saturday 18th January 2020

  • 1:50 at Ascot – Magic Of Light to Win at 5/2 with BetVictor

You don’t get many more convincing wins than Magic Of Light managed in December. Jessica Harrington’s nine-year-old won a four runner race by 99 lengths after two of her rivals were pulled up. She’ll find things much tougher in the bet365 Mares’ Hurdle but tough is just how this experienced battler likes it. Magic Of Light proved her stamina reserves when finishing second in the Grand National last year. She also won this race 12 months ago and can repeat the trick by getting the better of the bookies’ favourite, Papagana.

  • 2:25 at Ascot – Colonial Dream Each Way at 16/1 with bet365

First and second in last year’s Holloway’s Handicap Hurdle line up again for another crack at this Grade 3, 2m3½f handicap. The 2019 winner, Ballymoy, will carry just 2lb more than 12 months ago but the seven-year-old has not won since and in unlikely to start on Saturday. That may just open the door to Colonial Dreams. Nicky Henderson’s eight-year-old ended last season with a win and if he can build on his first run of this new season just after Christmas he’ll have every chance of landing at least a place.

  • 3:00 at Ascot – Allysson Monterg Each Way at 12/1 with RaceBets

Acting Lass is the only winning favourite of the bet365 Handicap Chase in the last 10 years but connections of Espoir De Guye are confident that their charge has what it takes to go in and complete a hat-trick. He’ll have to do it with 11st 3lb on his back in this 18 runner, 2m5f race though. Whilst a bet on the favourite isn’t a bad play, it might pay to take a bit more of a risk by backing Allysson Monterg each way. This experienced 10-year-old makes a much awaited return to the track after a year off but carries only 10st 11lb and has run well on the back of a break before.

  • 3:35 at Ascot – Defi Du Seuil to Win at 4/6 with Ladbrokes

The Grade 1 Clarence House Chase is often contested by horses who have a real chance of contending in the Champion Chase and in Defi Du Seuil we very much have a horse tipped for big things at the Cheltenham Festival. Philip Hobbs’ seven-year-old tops the betting for the Champion Chase and is odds on to head to Cheltenham on the back of a win at Ascot. The popular and ever reliable Un De Sceaux is the main threat having lost by just a neck to Defi Du Seuil when they met in the Tingle Creek Chase. Both the market principles are expected to improve though and the favourite should get the job done.
